Charlton Athletic v Colchester Town FC, The Valley, Charlton
Charlton 1 – 0 Colchester
So I turned down tickets for Arsenal v Everton to see this one… Did I make the right choice? That game finished 2-1 to the Gooners, this one clearly didn’t. What did happen however was something very strange indeed.
On 64 minutes Colchester stuck the ball in the back of the net. This was at first disallowed by the ref, moments later it was awarded following discussions with the linesman. The game then restarts. The 4th official then appears on the pitch and has a chat with the ref. He then trots back over to the linesman and the goal is once again disallowed. Play is then resumed back on the edge of the area for a drop ball. Why? The ref had blown up quickly as he had anticipated the linesman was about to flag for offside, which he didn’t. Totally crazy incident.
New signing Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a great goal to secure the win for Charlton. Nathan Eccleston on loan from Liverpool could have netted his second for the club at the end of added time but the ref blew up early when he was clear through on goal. Not a great game for Darren Sheldrake, I can’t imagine he will be overseeing many games in the near future.
